These courses are live, short sessions of up to 1.5 hours. You need to have a computer with internet access. A microphone may be helpful if you wish to ask questions, but is not essential. You do not need a webcam to participate in these courses.

The first course is Beginning to trace your Scottish family history.  This course is suitable for beginners to family history research. The session will last for an hour and there will also be time for questions.  The course will cover:
  • Getting Started in collecting information
  • Finding out more from birth, marriage and death records
  • Recording the information
  • Online and other sources for Scottish records

The next course is Next Steps in tracing your family history in Scotland. This course is suitable for those who have already started their family history research or have participated in the beginner course.  This session will last for an hour and there will also be time for questions.  The course will cover:
  • Church records in Scotland
  • Using Census records in Scotland
  • Strategies for effective use on online records
  • Finding family who emigrated from Scotland
  • A range of online and other sources for Scottish records.

The last course for this series is Organising and recording your research. This course is suitable for those who have undertaken some research and are now looking for ideas and strategies in organising their work. The course will cover:

  • Recording your research
  • Using genealogy reports and charts
  • Using genealogy software

Our new online courses using our specially designed online learrning system are planned from  October 2013.
These courses take place over a number of sessions and the first ones to be available include:

  • A 3 session course Using technology for genealogical research
